Norovirus
Now that the weather is milder, catching the flu is unlikely. However we now have to battle the Norovirus (also referred to as viral gastroenteritis). This is the most common cause of upset stomachs in the UK. The Norovirus is also called the ‘winter vomiting disease’ as it is most likely to occur in the winter, however you can get it at any time of the year.
Norovirus is most likely to affect people in hospitals, nursing homes and schools as the virus spreads easily and can contaminate areas for days.
The Norovirus can spread from contact with an infected person or contact with surfaces and objects that are contaminated and eating contaminated food and water.
Norovirus presents with acute nausea and/or vomiting and/or abdominal cramps and diarrhoea.
The illness lasts for 24-48 hours and during this time it is advisable not to go to work as others may catch it as well.
